ALASKA

Alaska is BIG COUNTRY – everything is huge in Alaska starting with the specter of its landscape.  The seagulls and eagles are big, the salmon and bears are big, and most importantly, the rainbow trout are big.  What nourishes and supports this BIG environment is the life cycle of the Pacific Salmon.

Each year, millions and millions of salmon return to the stream or river of their birth to spawn and die.  Every aspect of this process feeds the rich aquatic environment beginning with the eggs of the spawning female to the smolt produced by the eggs and, finally, the decaying flesh of the parents.  It’s an awesome process that every fly fisherman should witness at least once.

Of greatest interest to the fly fisher usually are the giant rainbows.  This is also a wonderful variety fishery with pike, grayling, char and of course, the salmon.  If size is the measure, the Chinook or King Salmon is the top choice.  Generally recognized as the top fly rod species of the salmon is the Silver or Coho Salmon.

Timing is critical in planning an Alaska trip as there is a cycle to the salmon runs that starts with the Chinooks and ends with the silvers.  Also, the best rainbow fishing takes place when the rivers are not choked with salmon.

We favor the top five-star, fly out lodges as the premier method to experience Alaska.  Why?  While on the high-end side, practice has proven that these operations provide a quality experience with top notch guides, cuisine, and service.

Another option is the Alaska float trip.  This is a good approach if you are a hardy soul and want to be part of the landscape.
